From Linda Foley, Sheila-Marie Gordon, and Jay Foley, of the ITRC and now of the ID Theft Info Source
There has been an exciting change in our lives. We have left the ITRC and started a new company,
the ID Theft Info Source™. Our original goals were to band together with other passionate thought
leaders to educate, and find proactive solutions to battle the growth of this crime. We also wanted
to encourage businesses to embrace best practices in the handling of PII from the time it entered
the company through its destruction, and by doing so, help business protect their bottom line. To support
that mission, we set up a call center to assist victims. Through ITRC that goal was met. Through our
new company we plan to readdress the major issues of identity theft: protection and best practices,
following new trends and looking at the big picture - a return to the more systemic approach towards
this evolving crime.
Bios:
Linda Foley - An identity theft survivor herself, Linda has spent the last 14 years studying the crime of identity theft. In 1999 she founded the Identity Theft Resource Center and began to work with victims trying to clear their names and restore their lives. She is nationally respected for
the depth of her knowledge of identity crimes
Jay Foley - After his wife became a victim of identity theft, he helped her to found the Identity Theft Resource Center in 1999. Jay’s computer and investigative talents lead him to specialize in cybercrime and criminal identity theft. However, he also shares his wife’s passion about all types of identity theft crimes and methodology.
The Foleys - Together they have been interviewed by hundreds of print, radio, and television media about various topics regarding identity theft. They received the 2004 National Crime Victim’s Assistance Award presented by the US Attorney General. They have also received numerous commendations and awards for their work in the field of identity theft, victim’s rights, and have served on task forces ranging from the California DMV to the US Attorney General’s task force on identity theft. In 2010, they were honored to accept the Congressional Victims’ Rights Caucus Suzanne McDaniel Public Awareness award on behalf of the ITRC and the Foley's work in helping the public understand the issues of identity theft. The Foley's have served as subject matter experts for various state and federal legislative committees and testified in hearings across the country. “Their opinions on identity theft are ‘on spot’,” said Adam Levin from Identity Theft 911.
Sheila-Marie Gordon - At the young age of 18, Sheila’s PII was stolen by a co-worker who then used it to bring an illegal immigrant into the United States as Sheila. The thieves together committed financial, criminal, medical, and governmental identity theft which still continues today, almost 20 years later. Aggravating an already convoluted and egregious crime, is the fact that businesses, the policies of the CRAs, and governmental agencies have not created the ability to stop data miners from continuing to use the fraudulently stolen information. Sheila has had to change her own identity to separate herself from the continuing crimes. Passionate in her desire to help others Sheila was the ITRC's first victim advisor, developed the ITRC advisor call center, the project manager for the new ITRC website in 2007, and served as the Director of Victim Services from 2001-2009. She has been interviewed by numerous print, television and radio media and supplied testimony for legislative hearings. She was one of the primary researchers and writers of the annual Identity Theft: The Aftermath studies from 2003-2008, and wrote a white paper about identity theft for the Office of Victims of Crime in 2009. Sheila is a key writer of all company power points, studies and training programs for the ID Theft Info Source™.
